The speciality

Upvas food, made every day — not only on Ekadashi

Sabudana khichdi and vada, upvas bhaji, shengdana amti and shengdana curry. No onion, no garlic. The plate Dombivli eats on a fast, ready at a counter from eight in the morning.

Why a shop that keeps sabudana ready is worth knowing about

Most kitchens make this when the calendar says to. A day of fasting then means either cooking it yourself or going without.

The problem

🗓️ A fast is not always planned

Ekadashi comes twice a month, Sankashti once, Mahashivratri once a year, and the Shravan Mondays run for a month. Add a vow taken on the day and a household can be fasting with no notice at all — which is exactly when nobody wants to start soaking sago.

What this shop does

🪔 Ready anyway, every day

Five dishes on this counter are upvas food and they are on it whether or not it is a fasting day. That is stock sitting there on the ordinary days, which is the cost of being reliable on the others.

Why it matters

🚫 No onion, no garlic

Upvas food is not simply vegetarian food — it leaves out onion, garlic and ordinary grain, and it is cooked apart from anything that has them. A kitchen that makes it daily is set up for that rather than improvising around it.

The upvas plate

Five dishes. The shop’s own advice is to have the shengdana curry alongside the khichdi and the vada — that is the full plate.

  • Vegetarian

    Sabudana Khichdi

    Best seller₹100

Pearl sago tossed with potato, crushed groundnut and green chilli, finished with lemon. The fasting dish everything else on this shelf is built around, and the shop’s best seller.

  • Vegetarian

    Sabudana Vada

    ₹130

The same sago and groundnut, bound with potato and fried to a crust. Crisp outside, soft through the middle — the way it stops being right if it waits too long.

  • Vegetarian

    Upvas Bhaji

    ₹100

Marathi-style potato bhaji made for fasting days — no onion, no garlic, cumin and green chilli instead. Eaten on its own or alongside the khichdi.

  • Vegetarian

    Shengdana Amti

    Best seller₹90

Groundnut amti — the thin, faintly sweet peanut gravy that turns a plate of sabudana into a meal. The cheapest thing on the whole menu, and one the shop marks as a best seller.

  • Vegetarian

    Shengdana Curry

    Best seller₹100

Maharashtrian groundnut curry for fasting. The shop’s own advice is to have it with the sabudana khichdi and the sabudana vada together, which is the whole upvas plate.

About these prices. These are the shop’s delivery prices. Ordering over the counter is usually cheaper — a delivery menu carries the platform’s commission and the packaging. They are taken from the shop's own listing rather than from a board, so treat them as the upper end and ask at the counter.

About these pictures. The dish pictures on this page are illustrations, not photographs of our own plates. They show what a dish is, not the portion you will be served.

How to put a plate together

₹190

The plain one

Sabudana khichdi ₹100 + shengdana amti ₹90. The two best sellers, and the cheapest way to eat properly here. The amti is thin and faintly sweet and is what turns a bowl of sago into a meal rather than a snack.

₹330

The full plate

Khichdi ₹100 + vada ₹130 + shengdana curry ₹100. This is the combination the shop itself suggests on its menu. Everything on it is fried, boiled or ground on the day.

₹200

Without the sago

Upvas bhaji ₹100 + shengdana curry ₹100. Potato and groundnut, no sago at all — worth knowing if sabudana does not agree with you, which for a fair number of people it does not.

Those totals are the delivery prices added together, not a set price the shop offers. There is no combo rate on the menu; the arithmetic is here because a menu of single items makes you do it in your head at the counter.

Before you order for a fast

Every dish on this page is listed as vegetarian and as upvas food by the shop. Fasting rules differ from household to household, though — some keep sendha namak only, some leave out groundnut, some will not take anything fried outside the house at all. Say what you keep when you order. A counter can answer that in a sentence and a website cannot answer it at all.
