🟢 36 of 39 dishes vegetarian · 🔺 3 egg · Tea house and snack centre · Upvas food made every day

Satyawan Chowk, Devichapada · Dombivli West

The fasting plate, made every day. And ten kinds of tea.

Nalini’s is a tea house and snack centre. Sabudana khichdi and vada, upvas bhaji, shengdana amti and curry — upvas food that most kitchens make when the calendar says to, and this one makes from eight in the morning until eleven at night, every day of the week. Alongside it, South Indian breakfast, ten teas and four coffees.

For the best taste and delicious food.

What the shop sells most of

Not a house pick — these are the 5 its own listing marks as best sellers, and 3 of the 5 are fasting food.

  • Vegetarian

    Sabudana Khichdi

    Best seller₹100

Pearl sago tossed with potato, crushed groundnut and green chilli, finished with lemon. The fasting dish everything else on this shelf is built around, and the shop’s best seller.

  • Vegetarian

    Shengdana Amti

    Best seller₹90

Groundnut amti — the thin, faintly sweet peanut gravy that turns a plate of sabudana into a meal. The cheapest thing on the whole menu, and one the shop marks as a best seller.

  • Vegetarian

    Shengdana Curry

    Best seller₹100

Maharashtrian groundnut curry for fasting. The shop’s own advice is to have it with the sabudana khichdi and the sabudana vada together, which is the whole upvas plate.

  • Vegetarian

    Kanda Pakode

    Best seller₹100

Onion sliced thin, turned through besan and fried in loose handfuls. The monsoon order, and the thing to have with the ginger tea.

  • Vegetarian

    Puran Poli

    (2 pieces)Best seller₹140

Chana dal and jaggery ground to a puran, sealed into a soft poli and griddled. Made fresh twice a day — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. — so it is worth arriving inside one of those windows rather than between them.

About these prices. These are the shop’s delivery prices. Ordering over the counter is usually cheaper — a delivery menu carries the platform’s commission and the packaging. They are taken from the shop's own listing rather than from a board, so treat them as the upper end and ask at the counter.

About these pictures. The dish pictures on this page are illustrations, not photographs of our own plates. They show what a dish is, not the portion you will be served.

Why this shop and not the next one

Six things that are true of Nalini’s and are not true of every tea stall on the road.

🪔 The fasting plate, every day

Most kitchens make sabudana khichdi when the calendar says to. Five of the six dishes here are upvas food and three say so on the menu — which means Ekadashi, Sankashti, Mahashivratri and the Shravan Mondays are ordinary days at this counter, not a scramble.

🍵 Ten teas, and they mean it

Without sugar and less sugar are separate items, made that way from the start rather than served with the sugar on the side. A shop only bothers to list that if enough people ask.

🕗 Open eight in the morning to eleven at night

Fifteen hours, every day of the week. The cup before the 8.40 and the plate after the last train are the two a kitchen that shuts at nine cannot sell you.

🟢 Vegetarian, apart from the egg counter

Thirty-six of the thirty-nine dishes carry the green mark. The three that do not are the omelettes, and they are on a page of their own — so the veg half can be read without picking through it. If you keep a fast, say so: a shared kitchen is a fair question.

🥣 Made when you order it

Sabudana goes soft, vada stops being crisp and pohe dries out. This is a counter, not a steam table — which is also why puran poli has a window rather than a shelf.

📍 Satyawan Chowk, Devichapada

Gavdavi Darshana, shop four, in Dombivli West. Close enough to walk to from most of Devichapada, which is the only delivery time that never slips.

The one thing worth timing

Puran poli is made twice a day — from 10 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon, and again from 6 until 10 at night. Between those two windows it is finished. Chana dal and jaggery ground to a puran, sealed into a soft poli and griddled to order; ₹140 for two, and one of the four items the shop’s own listing marks as a best seller.
