Nursing home
When someone cannot be looked after at home any longer.
A small inpatient facility for people who cannot be safely or adequately cared for at home. Typical stays are 15 to 20 days.
If someone is in immediate danger right now
Do not wait for an appointment. Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24 hours), or take the person to the nearest hospital emergency department. If you are able to speak to us directly, our number is +91 84259 80004.
Who can be admitted
Admission is decided by the psychiatrist after assessment. This list is what the nursing home is equipped for — it is not a promise of a bed on any given day.
- ▸Acute episodes of schizophrenia, mania or depression where a person cannot be managed at home, including where they are unable to agree to admission
- ▸People at risk of suicide, in the context of depression or schizophrenia
- ▸Severe depression
- ▸Dissociative and conversion presentations
- ▸De-addiction and medically supervised detoxification
“He will not agree to come. Can you still help?”
It is one of the most common questions families ask, and one of the hardest parts of a serious mental illness — that the illness itself can remove a person’s ability to see they are unwell. Manas can admit people who are unable to agree to admission, within what the law allows and with the family involved throughout. Ring and describe the situation; you will get a straight answer about whether it can be managed here.
What happens during the stay
- Medical management, with a physician involved for physical health
- Modified electroconvulsive therapy under anaesthesia, where it is indicated
- Counselling during the admission
- Occupational therapy
- A planned handover to a half-way home or rehabilitation centre for schizophrenia and de-addiction
A typical admission runs 15 to 20 days. The purpose is to get through the acute phase safely and to establish treatment that can then continue at home — not to keep anybody in hospital longer than the illness needs.
And afterwards
Rehabilitation and half-way homes
For schizophrenia and for addiction, discharge is not the end of treatment. Manas is linked with a half-way home and rehabilitation centre, so that the step between hospital and ordinary life is a step and not a cliff.
Ask about an admission
Telephone is the fastest route. Describe what has been happening and how long — you will be told whether an assessment is needed first, and what to bring.
