Investigations

Tests that answer a question.

Psychiatric diagnosis is made by assessment, not by a machine. Investigations are used where they settle something a conversation cannot — and are not ordered for the sake of it.

Available at the centre

EEG

Electroencephalography — recording the brain’s electrical activity, used where seizures or certain neurological causes need to be ruled in or out.

ECG

Electrocardiography — heart tracing, done before ECT and where medication or physical health makes it necessary.

Psychological testing

Structured, standardised assessment of intelligence, personality, cognition and specific difficulties — the evidence behind a diagnosis rather than an impression of one.

What psychological testing is, and is not

It is a structured measurement

Standardised instruments, administered and scored the same way every time, comparing a person against established norms. That is what makes it evidence rather than impression — and what makes it useful when a school, a court or a second clinician needs something more than an opinion.

It is not a verdict on a person

A test result is one input into a clinical judgement, read alongside history, observation and everything the family reports. Nobody here will hand you a number and call it a diagnosis, and an online questionnaire is not this.

Testing is commonly used for children whose difficulty at school is not yet understood, for questions about memory and concentration in adults, and where a diagnosis needs to be established more firmly before long-term treatment begins.

Ask what is needed

If another doctor or a school has asked for a specific test or report, tell us which — it saves a visit.
