Dr. Adwait Padhye

M.D., D.P.M.

Consultant psychiatrist. President of Manodaya Trust. For twenty-five years he has run a psychiatric practice in Dombivli and, alongside it, spent a great deal of time doing the thing most clinicians never do — explaining mental illness in public, in Marathi, at length, and on the record.

The practice

Dr. Padhye holds an M.D. and a D.P.M. — a Diploma in Psychological Medicine — and practises as a consultant psychiatrist at Manas Psychological Health Centre & Nursing Home in Ramnagar, Dombivli East, which he directs.

The centre is unusual in what it keeps under one roof. Outpatient psychiatry and talking therapy are common enough; an inpatient nursing home that will take somebody through an acute episode, on the same premises, with EEG, ECG and psychological testing and with modified ECT given under anaesthesia by the centre’s own anaesthesiologist, is not. It means a family in the middle of a crisis is not sent between four institutions to assemble one course of treatment.

His clinical work covers the range a general psychiatrist sees — depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar illness, addiction — and the severe end that many outpatient practices refer elsewhere: schizophrenia, acute mania, catatonia, and people at immediate risk of suicide.

In public

A psychiatrist who does not hide behind the vocabulary.

Mental illness in India is discussed, when it is discussed at all, in whispers and euphemism. Dr. Padhye’s answer to that has been volume and plain Marathi: 119 recorded talks and films on the centre’s channel, long conversations with writers and clinicians, short explainers, and recordings of the trust’s own public events. It is not marketing — most of it is an hour or more long, which is not what marketing looks like.

Beyond the clinic

Manodaya Trust

As President he leads the trust’s public work — Palakshala for parents, Janeev awareness sessions, stress management for schools and workplaces, and the peer groups people stay in long after treatment ends.

Unnat Manas Sanman Puraskar

In the centre’s silver-jubilee year he established an award felicitating people living with or recovering from mental illness. The first ceremony was held in Dombivli with psychiatrist and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Bharat Vatwani as chief guest, and Dr. Padhye interviewing the recipients.

Mi Ashtapailu

Now in its sixth season, a programme for schoolchildren built on the eight intelligences — run, in its organisers’ words, as an experience rather than a competition. What is on →
