The shop

A kirana in Buvapada.

Not a supermarket, whatever the directory files it under. A counter shop on a lane in Bhaskar Nagar, open seventeen hours a day, run by the family that owns it.

Who runs it

Shiva Stores — शिवा स्टोअर्स on the board over the door — is run by Surendran Parambath at Buvapada, in Bhaskar Nagar, Ambernath West. It is registered with the Food and Drug Administration, Maharashtra as a retailer.

What it sells is the ordinary run of a general store: the atta and the dal, the biscuits and the cold drinks, the phenyl and the agarbatti, and a stationery shelf that gets a family through a school year. What it keeps deliberately is the ITC range — kept in stock rather than ordered when somebody asks, which costs money to do and is the reason a trip here is not usually wasted.

It is the sort of shop that does not need a website and has one anyway, because somebody searching for a 10 kg bag of atta in Ambernath at nine in the evening should be able to find out that there is one four minutes away.

The board over the door. It is the only photograph of the shop there is at the moment, and it is shown at its own size rather than blown up.

What a shop like this is for

🕕

Open before six and after eleven

Seventeen hours a day. The milk before work and the atta somebody forgot on the way home are the two things a shop closed at eight cannot sell you.

🥄

One hundred grams, if that is what you need

A supermarket sells the pack it was sent. A kirana weighs out what the recipe wants, which is why nothing goes stale in a small kitchen.

🚶

It is at the end of the lane

Buvapada, by Ambedkar Chowk. No delivery slot, no minimum order, no waiting in — the trip is four minutes and you carry it back yourself.

📒

The old arrangements still work here

A running account settled at month end is not a feature an app can add. It is a relationship, and it belongs to shops like this one.

🛍️

The brands are actually in stock

Keeping the whole Aashirvaad and Sunfeast range on the shelf costs money that sits there. It is the difference between a shop you can rely on and one you have to check first.

👋

Somebody who knows the house

Which atta you buy, which biscuit the children like, and that you will be back on Thursday. That is the whole advantage, and it does not scale — which is rather the point.

On the name.

The board says शिवा स्टोअर्स — Shiva Stores, plural. The registration certificate and the business directories write it SHIVA STORE, singular. Both are the same shop. This site follows the board, on the grounds that what is painted over a shop’s own door is what its customers call it.
