Weddings

Two photographers, one wedding, and nobody has to manage us.

Candid and traditional are not rival philosophies — they are two different sets of photographs your family will want, and a wedding needs both.

Candid and traditional, and why you want both

People are often told to pick one. That is a false choice, and picking one is how families end up with a beautiful set of photographs that somehow does not include a single picture of grandmother.

Candid

Photographed as it happens

Nobody is asked to look at the camera and nobody is arranged. This is the moment your father turns away because he has become unexpectedly emotional, the cousins collapsing at something nobody else heard, the two of you when the room has stopped watching.

Candid does not mean the photographer wanders about hopefully. It means unposed, not unplanned — being in position a few seconds early, every time, all day.

Traditional

The photographs a family expects

Each ritual in its proper order, everybody recognisable, everybody looking at the camera. The group with both families. The one with all the aunts. The one your mother will actually put on the wall, which — and this is worth saying plainly — is almost never the artistic one.

These take organising, and organising takes a few minutes of everybody's time. We will tell you in advance when, so it does not eat your reception.

We already know the order

The moments below happen once and last a second or two. A photographer who has to look around to work out why everyone has started throwing rice has already missed the frame.

Maharashtrian wedding

  1. 1HaladTurmeric, laughter and the most colour of the whole wedding.
  2. 2AntarpatThe cloth between them drops at the end of the mangalashtak. One second.
  3. 3Sankalp & kanyadaanQuiet, and the parents’ faces matter more than the couple’s.
  4. 4SaptapadiSeven steps around the fire — hard light, moving subjects, no second take.
  5. 5Mangalsutra & sindoorClose, tight, and usually with six relatives leaning in.

Bengali wedding

  1. 1Gaye holudTurmeric again, and generally messier, which is a compliment.
  2. 2BoronShe is received at the door — the frame everybody forgets to book for.
  3. 3Shubho drishtiThe betel leaves come down and they look at each other. The best frame of the day.
  4. 4Sat paakSeven circles on the piri, carried by her brothers. Moving, and lit by whatever is nearest.
  5. 5Sindoor daan & ghomtaThe vermilion, then the veil. Intimate and fast.

From real weddings

Not one of these was staged for a portfolio.

How it goes, start to finish

STEP 1

You call

Tell us the date, the venue and roughly what you want covered. We will say straight away whether the date is free — that is the only question that matters first.

STEP 2

We meet

At the studio on Agarkar Road, or over the phone if you are out of town. We go through the ceremonies, who is travelling in, and what your family actually cares about having photographs of.

STEP 3

The date is held

50% holds it. The rest is due as agreed. For a wedding outside Dombivli, travel and stay are on you and we will tell you what that comes to before you decide.

STEP 4

The day itself

We arrive before you need us. We know the order of the ceremony, so nobody has to manage us. You get on with getting married.

STEP 5

Selection and editing

The set is culled, corrected and graded. You see the finished photographs, not a folder of nine hundred near-identical frames to sort yourself.

STEP 6

The album

Designed, soft-proofed, printed and bound lay-flat, so a spread can cross the fold without folding anybody in half. 40 pages as standard, more by the page.

Wedding packages

Indicative rates for a standard date in and around Dombivli. Extra days, distance and how much you want filmed all move them, so treat these as a starting point.
