Most of what goes wrong is quiet for years before it is loud for a week.

The body compensates, and a person feels perfectly well while a number that could be measured drifts further from where it should be.
That is the whole argument for a blood test in a year when nothing is wrong. Not because a test predicts the future — it does not — but because a measurement taken today can be compared with one taken next year, and a doctor can see a direction of travel long before a patient can feel one.
