What to bring the first time

None of it is compulsory — a phone call costs nothing and settles most questions. But these save a second journey.

  • ✓Any letter, prescription or advice from your doctor or surgeon.
  • ✓X-rays or scans if you have them, and the operation notes after an amputation.
  • ✓Any brace, calliper, limb or footwear you already use — including one that does not fit.
  • ✓Loose clothing, or shorts, so the limb can actually be seen and measured.
  • ✓Somebody who can help you in and out, if you do not walk easily yet.

Questions people ring and ask

How soon after an amputation can a limb be fitted?

Not until the wound has healed and the swelling has settled, which is usually somewhere between six weeks and three months, and is your surgeon’s decision rather than ours. A temporary limb is sometimes fitted earlier than a permanent one. Come and be seen before then anyway — there is shrinking, bandaging and exercise to be getting on with, and the stump you arrive with is largely the result of that work.

How long does it take?

A simple insole or a stock brace can be same-day. A custom brace is usually a few days. A limb is a measure-and-cast visit, fabrication, a first fitting, alignment adjustments and then walking practice — spread over roughly one to three weeks depending on the level and how the first fitting goes.

Will it hurt?

A correctly fitted socket should not hurt. It will feel strange, tight and heavy at first, and there is a settling-in period. Pain, a hot spot or a red mark that does not fade within twenty minutes of taking the limb off means the socket needs adjusting — come back. Adjustment is expected, not a complaint.

Do you make it here, or order it in?

Both, depending on what it is. Sockets, callipers, spinal braces and custom footwear are made to the individual measurement. Components — knees, feet, joints, hardware — are manufactured, and which ones suit you is part of the consultation.

What does it cost?

It depends entirely on what is being made and which components go into it — the range across a simple insole and a fully articulated above-knee limb is very wide. You are told the figure after the assessment, before anything is made. Ask on the phone and you will get an honest range.

Can you help with a scheme or a certificate?

Bring whatever paperwork you have and it will be looked at. Disability certification, and the schemes that follow from it, are issued by the medical board and the government — not by us — so what we can do is tell you what the appliance side of it needs and give you a proper quotation for it.
