Naru Rhodium & Naru Casting

Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai · since 1994

The mesmerising
rhodium touch —
and genuine protection.

Plating, casting and polishing for the jewellery trade. Done at the bench, by hand, on proper machines — and laid at a thickness that is still there in two years, which is the only part of plating a customer can actually judge.

“Jewellery making is hundred percent a human process.”

— Naru Rhodium & Naru Casting, in its own film

The number nobody can see

A proper coat is 0.75 – 1.0 micron. That is the entire argument.

Too thin and the alloy underneath begins showing through within months — a ring goes yellow-grey at the shank first, where the hand wears it.

Too thick and the layer becomes brittle and crazes. More is not better; correct is better.

A flash coat and a proper coat look identical the day the piece is handed over. They stop looking identical about four months later — and by then the jeweller who saved the money is not the one having the conversation with the customer.

Everything that happens here

Plating, casting and polishing under one roof — which matters, because each of the three decides how well the next one goes.

The bright mirror finish. What makes white gold actually white.

Yellow and white on one piece, masked and plated by hand.

Pink / rose rhodium

A warm rose tone, on its own or as the second colour in a two-tone.

Deep gunmetal. Makes a white diamond look considerably whiter.

Antique rhodium

An aged finish that settles into the recesses of temple and traditional work.

Master model to vulcanised mould to wax to metal. One design, any number of pieces.

Polishing

Magnetic polish

Steel pins driven by rotating magnets, into every place a wheel cannot reach.

Polishing

Dhaga polish

Charged thread, drawn through by hand, between links and inside galleries.

The film

Making of Jewellery

Seven minutes on the floor: melting, the assembling of flowers, balls, leaves and wire into a piece, and the polishing that ends it.

It is worth seven minutes because it shows the thing this trade is usually described without: hands. Melting, assembling, joining, polishing — every one of them a person.
