What to bring the first time.

None of it is a precondition — a phone call costs nothing and settles most things. But if you are coming in, these save a second visit.

If you are already trading

The last filed income tax return and the accounts behind it, your GST login or last few returns, bank statements for the current year, and whatever books you keep — in whatever software or notebook they are in.

If you are just starting

PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor or partners, proof of the business address, and a rough idea of what you will sell, to whom, and whether any of it crosses a State line.

If you have had a notice

The notice itself, with its DIN or reference, and the return it refers to. Note the reply date on it before anything else — that date is the constraint.

If your books are years behind

Whatever exists. Bill books, bank statements, a shoebox. It is a normal problem and it is reconstructed year by year; nothing is gained by tidying it first.

Four lines, and a person who knows your file

The card carries four numbers and they are all answered. You are not routed to whoever is free — the same people handle your books, so the question does not have to be explained from the beginning every time you ask it.

A practice that trains its own

The firm takes CA article trainees and articled assistants alongside its accountants. Only a chartered accountant in practice may do that, and a practice that teaches the work tends to do it to the standard it teaches.

Dates are tracked, not remembered

Returns, advance tax, TDS, ROC — every one of them is a date. They are diarised for your business and you are told before them, not after. Most of what a business pays in interest and late fees is not tax; it is lateness.

The books are written as the year happens

Monthly write-up and monthly bank reconciliation, so the year-end is a close rather than a reconstruction. It is also the only way the figure you are told in November is the figure you will file in October.

From the first registration to the assessment

Registration, the monthly returns, the audit, the notice and the appeal are handled in the same office. Nothing is passed on at the point it becomes difficult, which is usually the point where the history of the file matters most.

Questions that come up first.

We already keep our own books. Can you just do the returns?

Yes, and it is common. We will review what you keep first — not to criticise it, but because a return is only as good as the books under it, and it is better to find a gap in July than in a scrutiny notice three years later.

Do we need a GST registration?

It depends on turnover, on what you sell and on whether you sell across State lines or through an e-commerce platform — some of those require registration from the first rupee. It is a short conversation and worth having before you register rather than after.

Our accounts are years behind. Is that a problem you take on?

It is a normal one. Books get reconstructed year by year, returns are filed where they still can be, and where a date has passed we tell you what the exposure is rather than leaving it to be discovered. Bring what you have, in whatever state it is in.

We have had a notice from the department.

Bring it in, with the return it refers to. Most notices are answerable on the papers and many are automated mismatches rather than allegations. The one thing that reliably makes them worse is letting the reply date pass.

Can you help us get a bank loan?

We prepare the project report, the projections and the CMA data a lender asks for, and we prepare them from your actual books. What we will not do is write projections a business cannot meet — a facility sanctioned on figures that do not hold becomes the next problem rather than the solution to this one.

What do you charge?

It depends on the size of the books and the registrations you carry, so it is quoted after we have seen what is involved rather than off a list. Ask on the phone and you will be told before any work starts.
